Before moving to Germany in 2000, I worked as a staff writer at the Chicago Tribune and the Philadelphia Inquirer. I wrote hundreds of news and feature articles, my main focus on education and religion.

As a freelancer, I've broadened my scope to different media, most recently radio. While a good amount of my work focuses on Germany in some way - travel, life, language, culture, history - I'm a generalist at heart and love writing about just about anything.

Alongside freelancing articles and writing the nonfiction book Lost to the World, I taught block seminars in journalism at the Technische Universität in Chemnitz in eastern Germany.

Here are a selection of the publications, clients and projects I've worked with. Travel writing has its own page on this site.

  • German Life Magazine. Excerpt of Hamburg, Gateway to America, a look at the emigration history of Hamburg and plans for its new Ellis Island-type museum, BallinStadt.
